The court of Maximilian II—Holy Roman Emperor and undisputed King of much of Europe—offered an unparalleled opportunity for artistic and musical development: ideas and influences could be widely exchanged in a context of amicable rivalry. Here we meet contemporaries of the great Orlandus Lassus: Vaet, Galli, Maessens, who prove that their musical skills admirably rival those of any of the Flemish masters of the period. The centrepiece of the recording is Galli's ethereal Missa Ascendetis post filium, a parody mass based on Vaet's motet.
